Ionising radiation overexposure is a possibility fatal event and high doses to the gut may in part direct the outcome. A letal dose (15 Gy) of total abdominal irradiation (TAI) to mice results in 50% survival that was ameliorated by anti-inflammatory treatment. Marked morthological changes to the intestine were observed concomitant with augmented permeabilityand decreased enzyme activities. Inflammatory mediators were increased in the intestine as well as in the lungs that were outside the radiation field. Intestienal elements were measured in mesenteric lymph nodes indicative of some trafficking by lymphatics. Thus TAI may provide a relevant model of severe trauma to study multi-organ effects.
