For 20 years, IRSN has been carrying out research programmes consisting of computer-code development work and experiments, aimed at improving knowledge and providing validated codes for the safety evaluation of conventional fire risks in nuclear plants. Such fires occur in a highly confined atmosphere, as nuclear plants and laboratories are made up of several mechanically ventilated rooms connected by doors. The results of this research, especially the computer tools, are used for the safety analysis of nuclear plants, particularly as part of PSA studies. This paper provides an overview of fire research carried out over the last 6 years and that planned in the near future, for both experimental and modelling purposes.
